Editing the Commercial

Today, October 28,2019, the objective was to edit the clips from the commercial and see (possibly) the beginning for my group and I skills in the media industry. This is said because this commercial would show us what creative qualities each of us possess. Finishing the commercial would calm my anticipation about seeing the finished product of this commercial. So with all of this in mind, when I got to class, I logged into the profile of my classmate that our takes are saved under. When trying to access Pinnacle Studio and from what Ms. Katz said to the class, I discovered there was a issue with the software. This means that this was going to prevent me from editing the commercial. This isn't a major setback because all other assignments were completed in a timely manner. The only thing that can be done is to make the best of whatever is given to be done. Technology has its mishap because nothing is perfect. Instead of looking at everything as a big bummer, our Aicemedia improvised and gave us a different assignment to complete to make up for the editing blog for today.
To replace the goal of editing the clips today, the clips were to be removed from the computer and dumped onto a flash drive or a google drive. One of the members in my group, Josh, volunteered to put it into his google drive. However, I had my flash drive on hand if we needed to put it on there instead. Before he could do all of this we had to go on the profile the videos we shot were under. I logged into the profile they were under which is Amina's (who plays the innocent cheerleader in the commercial). I found that I couldn't find the folder the clips were in. The solution to this was login on the computer they were initiatively dumped on.
Josh, who was already at the correct computer, logged in with Amina's info and located the folder that contained the footage. I didn't have much of a task in this process because the footage wasn't being dumped into my google drive or on my flash drive. I watched as Josh signed into his google drive to proceed with the next steps. He then dragged the necessary clips into his google drive. This was quite simple because they were all in one folder labeled "Media Folder." If the folder wasn't created then the task of moving footage to the google drive would have taken much more time to do so. He ensured he dragged everything to the correct location and I did too as I quietly observed what was being done. Since that was all that could be done in relation to the commercial, I decided to start writing this blog on what took place today. Hopefully on October 30th, Pinnacle Studio will be functioning effectively and editing the commercial can begin.

Storyboard Blog

The group started their storyboard on October 22, 2019. I, however, was absent because I went on a field trip. The field trip was to bring awareness to others about students who go hungry during the day. This is because their families cannot afford to pay for lunch for them. The trip took place at Hard Rock Stadium located in Hollywood, Florida. It was a great experience overall and made me realize I shouldn’t take things for granted. It was a sacrifice to go on this field trip because I missed an Aicemedia class. This means I missed an assignment also. The assignment giving was to create a blog on the storyboard process. The other members—Charli, Amina, and Josh— were able to complete theirs and conversation over the process.
Although I didn’t contribute as much to the creation of my group’s storyboard, I did give input when we originally started. The storyboard consists of different angles, movements, shots, and editing tools that will be used to make the FLHS Fright Night commercial a success. In the first box of the storyboard sheet ( or the first 5 seconds of the film) a long shot of Amina, the innocent cheerleader would be taken. After that, an over the shoulder shot would be taken behind Amina to show the killer, Charli, face. Then one would also be done over Charli’s shoulder. Next, a tilt would be shot as Amina gets up from picking up her pom pom.
The third storyboard box includes a pan and two-shot of the cheerleader and killer speaking about the fright night. An oblique angle will be used later on in the film to add a feeling of confusion as the cheerleader wakes up and is unaware of where she is. A POV angle will show her getting up and seeing the FLHS Fright Night party. Here, she’ll see students dancing and having a great time. To show this a pan will be used. Then another pan will be taken and she will see her killer at the party!

Filming the Commercial

On Thursday October 24, 2019, my group , which consist of Charli, Amina, Josh, and I, set out on the journey to film our FLHS commercial. Before leaving out the class,  my job was to handle the camera equipment and directing the filming process. It doesn’t seem like a big role as the actors or even the camera guy, but it’s also not a “walk in the park” either. The director has to instruct everyone of how they need to execute a certain scene or be firm. The director also stops  the take because it isn’t displaying all the important factors as it should. Before we could get to all of that, however, we had issues with the camera. The first camera we received only had 15 minutes left on it which meant that’s how much time we had to record. I thought it could work so I began setting up the camera on the tripod. This took place outside of Building 20 and 21 but also near the media center. During the process the camera’s shooting time rapidly went down. Now it was definitely time to get a new one.
After going back to the Aicemedia classroom, we told one of the teachers, Ms. Katz, the problem. She handed us another camera which had 15 minutes on there giving us a total of 30 minutes recording time. However, during the recording process we had less than 30 minutes to film because the camera time was running out quicker than normal. Despite all this the film was slowly coming together! As Josh shot Charli and Amina in the beginning of the film, I instructed him on what type of shot was expected for each take. I was also there to help and show the crew what I was seeing and let them know if I had any ideas of what could be added into the scene. After shooting the scene where the monster and innocent cheerleader meet, I disengaged all equipment and packed it back into the bags. The group and I went back to the classroom to get another camera to shoot the ending of our commercial.
This time for the last camera it had a recording time of 103 minutes. This was a great thing because the film didn’t feel like it was being rushed because of the recording time on the camera. Before leaving the classroom we asked students to volunteer to be apart of our FLHS party. This was needed because one of the scenes in the Fright Night commercial is a party that the lost cheerleader wakes up to. Along the way to the senior patio, we asked more students to join the party scene to show the liveliness of Fort Lauderdale High students. In this scene, I didn’t have much of job besides helping in deciding if the film should be done again and how it should be done. After shooting the scene of Amina waking up, the party scene was the final take. As students gathered with drinks in there hand, I used my phone to play Micheal Jackson’s “Thriller” to make it feel like it was really Halloween night. I also joined the party scene to make it look fuller. After this I watched the take and saw that it was great! Then I took down the camera and walked back to class feeling pleased with the outcome of the filming. In class, the takes were dumped onto the computer. When trying to find them, however, some of them looked missing. In the end everything shot on the SD card was found. Editing is the next journey and I’m ready to embark on it!

Editing Lesson Blog

Today, October 14,2019, was an editing lesson in Aicemedia. The lesson focused on steps that leads to the completion of your video. These steps will help in making the teacher's and Cambridge graders' job easier and also give them less opportunities to score you low. As an Aice student, I came to the realization that it's my job to remember and study (if needed to) these procedures and tools when giving projects. These tools don't only have to be applied to schoolwork but can be used in projects outside of the class to broaden my skills and knowledge. To begin with, a folder that's going to consist of your footage has to be created. This is done by double right clicking, selecting new and clicking folder. After, the name "folder" at the bottom of the folder icon can be edited to whatever it needs to be. For example, mine is going to be labeled "FLHS Fright Night Commercial" or something of that sort.

Next, the SD card reader has to be inserted in the side of the computer. Then I will have to locate the DCIM folder to find my footage. If I don't see my footage, I can go to private and select something calls AVCHD. Then, I have to find stream, locate my footage and drag it to the designated folder. All of these steps are apart of the process called dumping which is when you retrieve footage from your SD card before turning in equipment. Importing is the next essential step necessary for a successful film. This is process where footage is taken from the computer and moved to the editing
software, Pinnacle Studio. In Pinnacle Studio, I'll go to desktop at the top and click the plus sign to import my clips so they can be edited. While on the editing software, my footage I plan on editing goes into AV Track 2. At the top, the edit tab allows me to add things to spice up my video's presentation. Transitions and effects are given and allow the editor to choose what they want. It  could be a specific dissolve or even a flame of fire effect. This tool allows students to make their film even more creative. Footage can also be split in half going to the razor icon that allows you to do so. The red play bar, found in AV Track 2, allows  you to move along the take and see it at your own pace. This navigation also helps in seeing what needs to be removed or added. Above AV Track 2, is AV Track 1 which is where the title of the clip is added. The title can be edited in endless, creative ways. In a tab named "Motions", different styles of how the title enters the clip can be chosen. Changing the color, font, size and much more is also enabled.

In AV Track 3, music, or sound overall, is placed in this track. The green and purple line are sound waves from the clip. Sound can be detached from the take. This is helpful if a voiceover is needed. After I'm completely finish editing, it's important to export the finished product. This process is the opposite of importing. The finished product is taken from Pinnacle Studio to the computer. The export tab at the top will be selected and I have to ensure the video is going to be exported in mp4. When the software ask where I want my video to go to, I have to ensure it goes to the right folder with the right name. The video will then take some time to be rendered. Rendering compiles everything you did in Pinnacle Studio and makes it smoother and not choppy. After that is done, the video should be viewed to ensure it was exported properly.

Research for Commercial

My group and I decided to do our commercial on FLHS Fright Night. We chose this idea because we thought it would be a cool and different way to promote our school. This  also recognizes an event that takes place in October all over the United States. For the research on Fort Lauderdale I didn’t have to conduct much because I attend the school myself so I know quite a few about it. Then I proceeded to watch commercials and get a feel of what they did and how they did it.
Fort Lauderdale High is a public school in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Here we are known greatly for our high academics and the programs we offer. The Cambridge program is a rigorous course that offers college credits and a full ride to Florida universities to students who pass 7 Aice classes and earn their Aice diploma over the course of 3 years. These classes aren’t as simple as the average honor or core class offered. The Cambridge program isn’t offered everywhere so we had a great advantage. Fort Lauderdale High also has the Law Magnet program where those who desire to pursue something great in the world of law. Students can embark on the journey of learning about law way ahead and not wait until law school to gain knowledge. In a commercial I watched pertaining the school, Fort Lauderdale strong academic and athletic talent was shown. However, this school is more than that. We are also strong in creative events and socializing. That’s why Fright Nights is a perfect ideas
Fright Nights consist of scariness and mysteriousness. The nights are filled with monsters, people hiding behind masks, and things to spook out those who attend it. In a commercial promoting this, zombies, mask killers with knives, girls and boys screaming and running, were shown. Because October is the month of Halloween, all of this was displayed in the commercial. Combining a memorable event like Fright Nights with our school is the perfect idea for a commercial because it’s like  “killing two birds with one stone.” We get to promote our school and use an event associated with October.

Planning Blog for FLHS Freight Night Commercial

Today, my group and I went over what exactly we wanted to present in our commercial. We also discussed how we would execute it in a way that was easy but fun to understand. In this commercial, we want audience  to see how fun and creative Fort Lauderdale High students are while giving a little scare and laughter to it. For the commercial, Josh will be the person recording and I'll be an extra. Amina will be an innocent young girl who is in the hallway of building 21. Here she will bend down to pick up something and be approached by a scary person, Charli, with a mask on. Amina is going to be whisked away and wake up lost and confused. She's going to find herself at a party which is going to take place near outside of building 20 and 21. Amina will eventually start enjoying her time at FLHS Freight Night. During all of this, a voiceover will take place to add a more spooky feeling to the commercial.
As Amina and Charli created a storyboard just to get the ideas across, I began to write down what was going to be needed for props, costumes, scheduling, location list, and a backup plan. For props a knife for Charli. A knife is necessary because Charli is going to take on the role of a scary character. Cups are needed because those at the Freight Night party will be having a good time and the cups will give an even better understanding of what's taking place at the scene. For the costumes, Amina will wear a Red Riding Hood outfit to depict the innocent look. The basket is also included in costumes as Amina will use it to pick up something. Charli and possibly others in the crowd will have a mask on to appear scary and mysterious.

For the schedule, we start off by blogging our plan for our commercial and figure out who does what today which is Thursday, October 10,2019. By Monday, October 14,2019, the storyboard will be completed and ready to turn in. Tuesday, October 21,2019, we will film our commercial and take enough takes and shots so we have plenty to choose from. We will also use the storyboard to help guide us. Thursday, October 23,2019, is the day we will edit and make sure the commercial is worthy of being turned in. After that the project should be ready to turn in. For the location of the commercial, the beginning of it will take place in building 21 hallway. After we will transition to the party scene where we possibly end the commercial. The backup plan for this project is a commercial on Fort Lauderdale Cambridge students to show their daily lives and issues. We will show scholars sleeping, slacking on homework, and doing everything people don't believe they actually do.

Introductory

Hi, I’m Amelia Turner and this is my first blog.I am 16 years old and I attend Fort Lauderdale High School as of Sophomore year. For Freshmen year I attended Westminster Academy. I  was born on September 1, 2003 to my mom Samantha and dad who isn’t in the picture. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. My mom is a single parent who raises all 5 children on her own.
I’ve always dreamed of becoming a successful lawyer like Annalise Keating in the television series “How to Get Away With Murder”. Depending on where life and God takes me I would want to pursue law at a prestige university like Harvard or Emory. However, I’m also a track athlete and I really have a passion for track. I want to pursue a track career in college possibly at UGA, University of Kentucky, LSU, and more. I was injured sophomore year and diagnosed with a stress fracture. This prevented me from running all of 10th grade and has set me far behind my competitors. I am now cleared to run but still feel a little pain. I really do hope I can pull through and earn a full ride scholarship to a D1 school for track and field.
I joined Aicemedia as a class to hopefully do better in the field of broadcasting. It’s always great to good at more than just academics and sports. I also do enjoy taking videos and pictures (of myself mainly) and editing. This class is going to help me understand the media world more and take advantage of the tools I’m being taught by my teacher and peers. If I do well in this class and the Cambridge exam, that would be a boost of confidence and reassurance that I can pursue something in the broadcasting field in the future.
